May 2020 – Writing with Rubber Bands: Creating Tension in Story

Join us to hear Cathy Rueter, who will be with us using ZOOM online, Saturday, May 9, from 11:00a-noon speaking on “Writing with Rubber Bands: Creating Tension in Story.”

Tension in fiction draws our readers in and puts them on the proverbial edge of their seats, creating a need to turn the page. Creating the delicate balance between reader stress and reprieve is more than stringing words together. In “Writing with Rubber Bands: Creating Tension in Story,” we’ll explore what tension is and why it’s crucial in any genre, fiction or non-fiction, along with the tips, techniques, and literary devices used to create it—without breaking a single rubber band.

Cathy Rueter will be presenting, via ZOOM,

Having served as vice president of ACFW DFW for four years, some tidbits you might not know about Cathy include – Born in Illinois, she lived in Michigan and Missouri, but now calls Texas her home. She has a B.A. in Fine Arts, studied Fashion Merchandising, once owned a bridal design business, and had the privilege of designing her aunt’s wedding dress.

Working for three years as a journalist, she has been traditionally published over 350 times. While she has a nose for news, she says she has a horrible sense of direction and once got lost in her backyard for over three hours. Granted, the backyard comprised twenty-two acres of woods!

She writes Christian murder mysteries but has also delved into grant writing. Most of all, Cathy’s a people-connector. Two years ago she gave wing to the Fledgling Writers Community with the goal of providing affordable, bite-sized writer presentations by industry professionals for anyone wanting to add to their writer’s toolbox. She’s a lover of people, and, most of all, a lover of God. For more information about Cathy, see Cathy Rueter, Writer or www.cathyrueter.com.
